Last Week - The Letter P

Sorry for the delayed and brief post. We've been hit with a case of the nasties and it is taking a while to get back on our feet. We had a great last week - all about the letter P.... pillow fights, popcorn, and the pumpkin patch! We look forward to a great day tomorrow.

We took a trip to the Pumpkin Patch!

Just thought this was an interesting pumpkin. We searched the patch for bumpy, smooth, tall, short, long stem, white........ pumpkins. The kids had a great time and needed a nap when we got back!

Cleaning out the icky insides. We read two stories about pumpkins - I'm a Seed, by Jean Marzollo and Pumpkin Pumpkin, by Jeanne Titherington.

We saved the seeds for roasting and will hopefully taste our yummy pumpkin tomorrow during snack!

A special reptile guest and the letter B

Science - The turtle, affectionately known as Arthur, came to visit today. He enjoyed swimming in the tub while we worked and played! Literacy - Today we learned the letter B --- B, bbbb, bear. We used our finger to write the letter on each other's bbback and we played bbbasketball! Math - We made pudding for snack and counted while each student took a turn at stirring. We are working on a fingerprint counting book and today we created 8 smiley faces! Finally, we made a "Favorite Pet" chart. Looks like cats won this vote. Social Studies and Art - We created our own pet shop! The students made store signs, pet collars, a pet house, and dog food with play dough. They had a blast taking turns at the cash register and purchasing pets and accessories!

BBBasketball

One of our favorite songs is "Down by the Bay." We do a clapping pattern during the verse and they love the silly rhymes in between the verses.

The girls are making patterns and practicing lacing.

Bunnies, kittens, and fishes

In celebration of our study of pets, J brought her pet bunny, Cody, to show the class. We had a great time playing with him and learning about how to take care of a pet rabbit. We read two books about kittens today, The Tale of Tom Kitten, by Beatrix Potter and Cookie's Week by Cindy Ward. During math we pulled pretend pet fish from the fish bowl and put them in number order. The kids are really enjoying our pet theme.

E and J got silly with Mr. Potato Head.

All together for snack time - Applesauce and Teddy Grahams

We used droppers to experiment with colored water. J found that blue and yellow water mixed to make green! After mixing colors we water painted pictures of our pets.

Pet Care and Nursery Rhymes

We continued our study of the letter A by making apple stamps today. We talked about pets and looked online for ways to care for them. Storytime is one of our favorites. Today we read two books about pet dogs - Clifford the Big Red Dog, by Norman Bridwell and The Great Gracie Chace, by Cynthia Rylant. We are also memorizing our first nursery rhyme - "Old Mother Hubbard."

Mystery socks - The students had to count the mystery items and tried to guess what was in each sock!

Something interesting in there!

Introducing Mrs. Ashley, my cousin and friend who is eager to help with the little ones.

Class Pets

Just thought I'd introduce you to our class pets! Tomorrow we will start our much delayed pet theme. We'll create our own little pet store and I hope to reschedule our field trip to the local veterinary clinic.

A as in Apple

Today we learned the letter A --- A, "aaa," alligator! We practiced writing it in many different ways and had apples for snack! We read Koala Lou, by Mem Fox (a sweet story for a child who may be feeling neglected by a momma who is busy with babies). Finally, we discussed that our families are communities. We all have a part to play and jobs to do. It was interesting to hear the jobs they assigned to each family member as we made little books. There are lots of moms and dads out there washing dishes and cars! Our littlest class members joined us for music, art, and recess. The rest of the time they were in their own class learning and playing with Mrs. Ashley! They had fun and stayed very busy! What a great day with everyone back at school.

Writing Aa -- in the sand, on the chalk board, and on the Magnadoodle!

Everybody load up for "The Wheels on the Bus"!

Additions to the Roll Sheet!

Most are facing loss due the storm, but our little school has a couple of additions. We've added a M and an E to the roll sheet. These sweeties needed at place to learn and play after their caregivers suffered storm damage. We were glad to welcome them in. Here are some pictures from the past couple of weeks. Tomorrow we will welcome J back and get back to business!
